Take Pause.

One of the things I never realized I would do when I decided to become a mom was research. And research some more. And when I was done, research again. Always looking for the newest and best information to raise my children the best way. From education options to food choices to medical decisions to discipline (specifically gentle parenting) and so much more.

Whatever decision that I make as a mom (in partnership with my husband, of course) is done so with prayer and a lot of solid research (yes, actual science). And then I keep researching to ensure it is still the best option, because let's be honest, research changes. What was known to be the best thing 10 years ago is very different than what is the best thing today.

We don't homebirth or cloth diaper or see a chiropractor or homeschool because it's "cool" or "different", we do it because we feel it is the best for our family.

People don't always understand why we choose certain things and that's okay. I don't need people to understand, but mutual respect is important.

Many times I have had people ask questions, make assumptions, or simply just share their opinions that aren't based on information. They're clearly based on their own beliefs about a situation.

I have been accused of child abuse because I take my children to see a chiropractor.

I have been told I'm crazy and I'm endangering my children because I choose to homebirth with a midwife.

It's been expressed that I'm overprotective because we choose to rearface our carseats as long as possible.

I've had someone tell me I'm killing my marriage because we cosleep.

I've been called stupid because we didn't circumcise our sons.

I'm really not sure when it became okay to ask someone else about their child's private parts or medical history.

I've had numerous comments regarding our choice to homeschool and cloth diaper and pretty much everything we choose to do. People even have something negative to say about baby wearing.

People really need to think about what they're saying before they say it. Assuming that we choose to do something because we are uneducated means that you truly don't know me. And instead of trying to get to know me more, you've already written me off.

God entrusted my kids to me. And I will do my very best for them every single day. Motherhood is my greatest calling and don't think for one second that I don't take it as seriously as I should. To assume that I would intentionally put my child at harm is insulting.

I will always respect what others choose for their family (even if I don't agree or even understand), as long as it does not harm their child. I ask only for the same respect and understanding that my choices may be different than theirs. And if that's not something that they can do, then I really don't think I need them in my life.

So next time you think about saying something or making a comment about someone's choice, take pause and remember that the person you're speaking to may have put a lot of thought and research and prayer behind the choice that they make.

Have you ever experienced this? What was said to you? How did you handle it?

How an Amber Necklace Saved the Holidays

Traveling, family, holidays, young children, these things are all a bit challenging as is but we got the added benefit of a teething 8 month old.

We left for our long, ten-hour, international road trip to visit our family for the Thanksgiving holiday. We had packed everything we thought we would need. Having kids makes you realize how many messes and other issues you are unprepared for, so we packed extra everything.

We had a feeling our youngest would be getting another tooth soon. He is normally a super happy kid, even when he is tired. Teething for him is a bit different though. He is still happy but there are some bouts of fussiness due to pain as well as extra long nursing sessions, usually at night. I often hear stories of kids being so fussy and miserable when teething. I hear of them just being beside themselves as their teeth come in. We have never had to experience anything like that and I attribute it to an amber necklace.

I saw firsthand how my oldest son acted when teething without the aid of amber for one day. We had lost his amber necklace and I looked high and low until I found it because the difference was very clear. I practically tore my house apart and contemplated buying another one that day so we would never go through that again. I have heard similar stories from other moms as well.

Why do we choose an amber necklace over other pain reducing alternatives like Tylenol?

Dangers of Tylenol
-Can result in liver and kidney toxicity even with recommended dosage
-Use of just once a month can increase chance of asthma over 500%
-Is associated with an increase in allergies

Benefits of using an amber necklace
-Natural pain reliever
-Succinic acid is released as the skin warms the beads. It get absorbed into the skin and acts as a pain reducer.
-A natural anti-inflammatory
-Helps amp up the immune system to fight off other common infections.
-Safe (when using properly made jewelry and proper sizing). Safe jewelry will have a knot between each bead and will have a specific clasp made to break is enough pressure is applied.
-Added benefit: cute!

With amber necklaces securely and safely fastened, we began our week-long trip. It was an enjoyable trip that was not ruined by a miserable teething baby, but instead was enjoyed by all, even the happy, teething baby.

Do you use amber necklaces for your kids? What about for yourself?

10 Natural Alternatives to the Flu Shot

The Flu Shot

It is that time of year again. You turn on the radio, you flip through a magazine, everywhere you look there are advertisements for this year’s flu shot.

It is important that whenever you decide to receive any sort of medication, whether it be a vaccine or a pill or anything else, that you do your research to ensure that it is the best thing for you and that it makes sense to use.
You can look up the inserts for vaccines and medications online through the FDA. The adverse reactions can be seen on the VAERS website, make sure you look at them while remembering that only about 10% of adverse reactions are reported.

While reading the different flu vaccine inserts on the FDA website I came across this quotation: This vaccine “has not been evaluated for carcinogenic or mutagenic potential, or for impairment of fertility.”

Last year’s flu vaccine was notoriously ineffective. According to the CDC, it was only 12% effective for people ages 18-49. On a “good” year, the vaccine is about 50% effective.
